The Vitamin Your Child Needs From You
As a nursing mom, you have probably been told to focus on iron supplement, folic acid or ‘multivitamins’. Research has shown that breastfed babies needs about 400IU of vitamin D daily which can be gotten by supplements or through breast milk. If you currently take multivitamins, you will need to check that the it contains minimum 2000IU daily recommended dose of vitamin D3. If it doesn’t, you’ll need to buy vitamin D3 separately. When mom has enough vitamin D stores, there’s better chances that baby will get some through breast milk. Vitamin D helps in bone and muscle building. It helps in conduction of the nervous system too. The importance of vitamin D can’t be exhausted in this post but know that you need adequate amount of vitamin D as a breastfeeding mom. As always, talk to your doctor to determine if vitamin D is appropriate with other medications you currently take. Vitamin D is not present in day-day food in adequate amount, hence supplementation is required for every adult.
