Don’t get carried away with summer travels and buying school needs

without planning your child’s holiday health screening

This holiday, children age 1-15yrs must visit a Dentist, Pediatrician and Optometrist. In other words, you must go and check up on their ‘overall’ health, their teeth & their eyes.

Optometrist: One of the most prevalent eye problem in children is astigmatism. Astigmatism is basically a result of abnormally shaped lens of the eye that causes image distortion because the image information is not registered properly on the Retina (the brain center of the eye).... jargons right??? Ignore!. Just understand that it’s one of the most common and undetected eye problem in kids.

Your child could go his entire primary school without seeing the blackboard well but the only thing you notice is poor performance in school

Children from birth to age 3 should be examined by their general practitioner for basic eye exam. This could be as simple as checking the eyes with that ‘shiny light’ thing called ophthalmoscope inside the doctor’s office. This checks basic eye structure and response of the eyes to objects. All children from age 5 must see an optometrist yearly except optometrist says otherwise. Things change from year to year, you are not wasting money.

If your child already wears glasses, do not join the league of folks who just give oga Chinedu your kid’s old glasses to cut out new lens on another fancy frame! Children need their eyes to be evaluated annually by an eye doctor! With astigmatism, they tend to grow out of it or at least the lens of the eye changes shape as they grow and their glasses prescription changes too!

Gone are the days when glasses equalled ‘being smart’ or ‘being a Nerd’ or ‘being cute’. Nowadays, a bad vision causes many unimaginable things such as excessive tantrums and poor academic performance

So this holiday, take your kid to see an eye doctor and you should do it every year. Even when they tell you ‘everything is normal’, keep going back every year
